Cooking Substitutions

Don’t you hate it when a recipe sounds delicious, but then someone goes and wears the ingredients as a hat?

Well I can’t help you there, but as for delicious recipes with unsafe ingredients, have no fear: I have some substitutions here!

Dairy and Alternatives

  • Cow’s milk –> Rice milk, Almond milk

Oils and Fats

  • Shortening –> Lard (be warned: some companies use citric acid in their processing!)
  • Butter, Margarine, Vegetable oil, Olive oil –> Canola oil, Sunflower oil (anyone else starting to think “oil” is a hilarious word?)


  • 1T Corn syrup –> 1/2 T Cane syrup
  • Powdered sugar –> Make your own in the blender!


  • Corn starch –> Flour
  • 1 t Baking Powder –> 1/2 t Calcium Carbonate + 1/2 t Baking Soda
